Malaysia expands Sabah military and surveillance to counter US and Philippine activity near Balabac

Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said Malaysia will increase its military presence and surveillance in northern Sabah, citing heightened US activity and new Philippine defence facilities on nearby Balabac Island.

In response to increased United States military operations and the development of Philippine defence installations on Balabac Island, Malaysia is set to boost its military footprint and surveillance capacity in northern Sabah. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari outlined plans to tighten border security in Kudat, Pulau Banggi and Pulau Balambangan, adding radar systems, drones and other intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tools.

The strategy includes enhancing combat and support aircraft, command-and-control systems, and deployment facilities, coordinated through a whole-of-government effort that brings together the police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Eastern Sabah Security Command, the National Security Council and the Sabah state government. Defence cooperation with allied countries will be expanded via intelligence sharing, joint training and exercises, while diplomatic engagement through ASEAN will aim to preserve regional stability. Officials emphasized that Malaysia respects other nations' sovereignty and does not seek an arms race, but views strengthening its defence as essential to address both conventional and non-traditional security threats such as smuggling and human trafficking.

Why it matters

The move reflects Malaysia's response to shifting security pressures in Southeast Asia, impacting regional stability.
