Malaysia pushes Malay into digital space to engage Generation Alpha

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced new digital initiatives to promote Malay among children born between 2010 and 2024, linking the language to games, videos and AI tools.

At the National Language Month 2026 ceremony in Padang Kota Lama, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek outlined a strategy to embed Malay in the digital lives of Generation Alpha, those born from 2010 to 2024. She called for creative animations, educational games, informative short videos and AI-driven applications to make the language appealing online. The plan is backed by Belanjawan Madani 2027, which earmarks funds for digital technology and AI to generate accurate, annotated language data for the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

Collaborations between the ministry and DBP have already produced hundreds of youth language ambassadors, and a new award scheme will recognise excellence in language and literature among university students. Fadhlina also announced a RM10,000 grant for each agency, higher-learning institution, teacher-training institute and NGO that implements language-preservation projects in 2027. The launch highlighted the theme “Bahasa Kita Wajah Kita,” stressing language as a core element of national identity and social cohesion.

Why it matters

The initiative aims to keep Malay relevant for future generations by integrating it into the digital platforms they use daily.
