Malaysia's central bank unveils SSDS+ platform for tokenised bond and sukuk issuance

Bank Negara Malaysia has introduced SSDS+, a cloud-based, distributed-ledger system for issuing and holding tokenised bonds and sukuk.

Bank Negara Malaysia announced the launch of SSDS+, a next-generation platform that uses cloud and distributed-ledger technologies for the issuance, custody and safekeeping of tokenised bonds and sukuk. Developed internally, the system builds on one outlet central securities depository and is intended to simplify trading, increase flexibility in structuring securities and broaden access for investors. SSDS+ is integrated with the RENTAS+ system, which records ownership of digital securities and provides round-the-clock payment and settlement services using central bank money.

The governor, Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour, described the rollout as a milestone in modernising Malaysia’s financial market infrastructure, highlighting its potential to support both wholesale and retail tokenised issuances. He added that the combined platforms will foster innovation and improve market efficiency.

Why it matters

The platform could accelerate Malaysia's shift to digital finance, offering faster, more flexible bond markets.
