Malaysia shuts schools in several states due to hazardous air quality
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced that schools in Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan will close tomorrow, with additional closures in parts of Selangor, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak because of unhealthy air pollution levels.
Fadhlina Sidek said the temporary shutdown will affect all schools in the three mentioned states and also those under specific district education offices in Selangor, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak. While schools remain closed, teachers will continue home-based instruction and staff are permitted to work from home. Schools in other regions will stay open as usual. The decision follows readings of the Air Pollution Index that reached unhealthy levels in 22 areas across the country.
Why it matters
The closures disrupt education for thousands of students and highlight the health risks of severe haze in Malaysia.
