Malaysia to Tap Vietnam Offshore Wind via Singapore, Boosting Local Contractors and Renewable Credits

Malaysia will benefit from a cross-border power scheme that imports Vietnamese offshore wind to Singapore, giving Malaysian firms and engineers new work and expertise.

At Singapore International Energy Week 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition Minister Fadillah Yusof outlined a new cross-border electricity venture linking Vietnamese offshore wind farms to Singapore, with Malaysia positioned to gain through contractor work and engineering experience. Petronas and Tenaga Nasional, operating as the MY Energy Consortium, will collaborate with PetroVietnam Technical Services to build the transmission infrastructure, including undersea cables, and to create a renewable energy certificate system for Vietnam, which currently lacks one.

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority has granted conditional approval for Sembcorp Utilities and partners to import 1.3 GW of low-carbon power, targeting mainly Vietnam’s wind output and some Malaysian solar, with roughly 30 % of the wind supply earmarked for Peninsular Malaysia. Yusof said the scheme illustrates the need for an ASEAN Power Grid, citing existing Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore links and plans to expand to other members such as Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

He emphasized that regional interconnections can enhance supply security, stability and affordability by allowing countries to share surplus generation. The project is slated to begin imports by 2035, pending final approvals and financing.

Why it matters

The deal expands regional clean-energy trade, creates jobs for Malaysian firms and moves ASEAN toward a shared power grid.
