Malaysia urges Myanmar to tackle root causes for lasting Rohingya solution
Malaysia's foreign minister said Myanmar must take concrete action on the Rohingya crisis, not leaving the burden to host nations.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan asserted that resolving the Rohingya crisis cannot rest solely on Malaysia and other host countries; Myanmar must commit to concrete measures that address the crisis's root causes. He affirmed Malaysia's continued diplomatic engagement and humanitarian cooperation, coordinated with ASEAN and the United Nations, to enable safe, voluntary and dignified returns.
Hasan highlighted bilateral talks with Myanmar aimed at securing guarantees of rights, protection and equal opportunities for returnees. He pointed to ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus—ending violence, expanding non-discriminatory aid, and promoting inclusive dialogue—as the guiding framework, noting that Special Envoy Tan Sri Othman Hashim is driving its implementation. Malaysia also backs the AHA Centre's cross-border aid efforts and is exploring additional initiatives to help Myanmar achieve peace and stability.
