Malaysian monarch signs seven amendment bills as parliament prepares 2027 budget

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim gave royal assent to seven amendment acts, including employment insurance and child sexual offences, during the fifth session of the 15th Parliament.

Sultan Ibrahim, Malaysia’s king, signed seven amendment bills into law, covering areas from employment insurance to child protection and communications regulation. Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Dr Ramli Mohd Nor disclosed the royal assent at the opening of the third meeting of the fifth session of the 15th Parliament, which is scheduled to sit for 37 days until early December. The legislative package includes amendments to the National Trust Fund, Road Transport, Witness Protection, Communications and Multimedia, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Lawmakers will soon focus on the second reading of the 2027 budget, briefings from select-committee chairs, and the Auditor-General's Report 2/2026. Three select-committee reports were presented on the day. Ramli also extended parliamentary condolences to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his family after the passing of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

Why it matters

The assent clears key reforms and sets the stage for Malaysia's upcoming budget and legislative agenda.
