Maldives and Malaysia launch talks on a new preferential trade pact

The Maldives and Malaysia have agreed to start negotiations on a preferential trade agreement aimed at boosting bilateral commerce and investment.

In a joint press conference in Malé, President Mohamed Muizzu and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that the Maldives and Malaysia will begin negotiations for a preferential trade agreement. The proposed pact is designed to expand trade flows and attract investment, with particular focus on renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction and Islamic finance. The leaders also exchanged new cooperation agreements on defence and Islamic matters, signalling deeper institutional ties.

They highlighted the importance of regular consultations and joint action within multilateral forums such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Commonwealth. Both parties described the discussions as highly productive and a step toward stronger strategic partnership.
