Mali President Grants pardon to French national convicted of destabilisation scheme

Mali’s transitional president Assimi Goita granted a pardon to French national Yann Vezilier, who received a 20-year prison term in June for an alleged role in a plot to destabilise the nation. The government’s spokesperson clarified that the pardon does not dispute the findings of the court and that Vezilier is required to depart the country without delay. Officials emphasized that the trial was conducted fairly and without external pressure.

France’s foreign ministry had earlier asserted that Vezilier was on a security-cooperation assignment and rejected the accusation of acting for French intelligence. Relations between Mali and France have deteriorated since military coups in the Sahel, prompting Mali to sever military cooperation with Paris and seek Russian support. Recent insurgent attacks linked to al Qaeda have further destabilised the region, highlighting the geopolitical stakes of the pardon.
