Mamata Banerjee Signals Expansion of INDIA Alliance and Calls for Election Commissioner Resignation
Mamata Banerjee said the INDIA bloc could welcome additional opposition parties such as the DMK and that its leadership will be chosen collectively, while also demanding the chief election commissioner step down.
Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters in New Delhi that the INDIA alliance is prepared to incorporate further opposition groups, including the DMK, and that the question of alliance leadership will be settled through collective deliberation. Speaking after the Trinamool Congress lost the state election to the BJP, she also called for chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign, alleging his role in ensuring the BJP’s win.
Banerjee said the alliance must act swiftly on the ground, citing a joint campaign against the poll panel and the SIR process. She noted contacts with parties such as the BJD, AAP, CPI(M) and expressed confidence that the BJP could be ousted by the 2029 election. The comments followed an INDIA bloc meeting that raised objections to the Election Commission’s handling of voter rolls. Banerjee was accompanied by her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, who claimed irregularities in 150 constituencies where vote margins were smaller than the number of deleted voters.
