Mass arrests across four Indian cities as protests demand chief election commissioner’s resignation
Protests against chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar spread from Delhi to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, leading to thousands of arrests.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) called a “Jantar Mantar 2.0” protest to force chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Delhi authorities denied permission, erected barricades and deployed drones, resulting in more than 7,000 arrests, among them CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, co-convenor Saurav Das, leader Ashutosh Ranka, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, and CPI(M) figures including former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Mumbai saw around 600 people, including activist Tushar Gandhi and actor Imran Khan, detained at August Kranti Maidan; Bengaluru’s student groups were stopped near the Election Commission office; and in Ahmedabad activists were arrested near Ellisbridge after slogans against Kumar. Police released most detainees by evening, but three CJP leaders remain in custody for further legal action. The crackdown sparked criticism from Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and BJP leader Harsh Malhotra, while opposition accused the government of stifling dissent.
