Massive security clampdown in Delhi sees thousands detained as protest stalls
Over 30,000 police and paramilitary forces blocked a planned rally at Jantar Mantar, detaining more than 7,000 participants, including several senior opposition leaders.
In anticipation of a protest at Jantar Mantar, Delhi mobilized more than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel, erected barricades, shut down 45 metro stations and conducted intensive screenings at airports, railway stations and bus terminals. The rally, called by the Cockroach Janta Party to oppose the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, was thwarted, leading to the detention of over 7,000 demonstrators, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, as well as CJP figures Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
Protesters who breached barriers at Akashwani Bhawan and Connaught Place threw stones, wounding seven police officers, including Deputy Commissioner Anant Mittal. Police also detained several journalists who presented press identification, confiscating their phones before placing them on detention buses. The BJP described the event as a failed attempt to “hold the city hostage,” while opposition leaders decried the measures as exceeding the Emergency era.
