Mecklenburg-Vorpommern CDU leader resigns, Philipp Amthor appointed interim chief

After the party’s severe loss in the recent state election, CDU head Daniel Peters resigned together with General Secretary Katy Hoffmeister. The party’s executive board in Schwerin then selected Philipp Amthor, a 33-year-old state minister, to serve as interim chairman until a formal party congress can be organized. Amthor, previously one of Peters’ deputies, presented himself as a “optimism officer” and emphasized that the regional CDU is not dead and will continue to work for the community.

He noted that the roughly 4,000 members still have a strong desire to improve the region politically. Party officials expressed concern that losing parliamentary seats and local offices could jeopardise the party’s presence across the state. Amthor plans to call a party conference early in the coming year and asserts that the organization remains fully functional in the meantime.
