MediaTek launches 2nm flagship chip, challenging Qualcomm's premium smartphone lead

Earlier this month MediaTek launched the Dimensity 9600 Pro, becoming the first company to ship a flagship mobile processor using TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm node, a milestone Qualcomm has not yet achieved. The chip targets high-end Android devices, emphasizing performance, power efficiency and on-device AI, and arrives as MediaTek holds roughly 33% of the smartphone chipset market, ahead of Qualcomm’s 22% share in the first quarter of 2026.

Qualcomm has recently informed its customers of upcoming double-digit price hikes effective after September 1, citing rising component costs, and is set to unveil a new Snapdragon platform at its Maui summit. Analysts note that MediaTek’s early-move could erode Qualcomm’s perceived superiority in premium phones, especially among price-sensitive Chinese manufacturers. Qualcomm is reportedly discussing a 2nm partnership with Samsung Foundry for future Snapdragon chips, indicating a defensive response. The competitive shift may lead OEMs to split flagship designs between the two suppliers.
