Meloni unveils aid package for transport and agriculture while cracking down on road blockades

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her cabinet approved financial support for truck drivers, farmers and fishers and warned that illegal road blockades will be punished.

Giorgia Meloni announced that her cabinet has ratified a large assistance package for truckers, farmers and fishers hit by soaring fuel prices. At the same time, she denounced recent road blockades in southern Italy, describing them as intimidation that will not be tolerated. Meloni ordered Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to act on requests from transport, farming and retail associations to keep supply chains moving and curb speculative price hikes.

The government will apply the security decree that makes road blocking a criminal offence, using all legal tools available. While supporting peaceful demonstrations, the administration stresses the need to uphold state law and protect ordinary citizens from disruption. Funds for the transport sector are already being disbursed, and new measures for agriculture and fisheries were approved in the same cabinet meeting.

Why it matters

The decision affects food and fuel supply chains across Italy and signals a tough stance on disruptive protests.
