Merz pushes full pension commission plan despite SPD labor minister's objections

Chancellor Friedrich Merz insists on implementing the pension commission’s proposals, clashing with new Labor Minister Alexander Schweitzer over early-retirement benefits.

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz declared his intention to carry out the entire set of pension commission recommendations, rejecting internal and SPD resistance. The plan would eliminate the discount-free pension option that currently allows long-term contributors to retire early without reductions. Labor Minister Alexander Schweitzer referenced the coalition pact that promised to retain the benefit and said a compromise must be found.

CSU chief Markus Söder supported Merz’s full implementation, whereas the eastern state premiers of Saxony, Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt voiced opposition. Union faction leader Thorsten Frei echoed the coalition committee’s endorsement of the commission’s package, allowing only minor textual tweaks. The cabinet is expected to vote on the draft law soon, with a parliamentary first reading scheduled before the year ends and a final vote aimed for early 2027.
