Mészáross' V-Híd channels state-linked funds to charities linked to Orbán's wife
V-Híd, the construction firm owned by Lőrinc Mészáros, provided financial support to two civil organisations in which Orbán Viktor's wife, Lévai Anikó, has participated.
Records obtained by investigators reveal that V-Híd, the railway-building company of Lőrinc Mészáros, has repeatedly granted financial assistance to two lesser-known NGOs that feature the involvement of Lévai Anikó, the spouse of Prime Minister Orbán Viktor. One beneficiary, Media a Családért Alapítvány, promotes traditional family values and awards journalists, with Lévai serving as its honorary patron and appearing at award ceremonies.
The second, Carola Egyesület, works to protect the cultural heritage of the Hungarian minority in Cluj-Napoca; although the group previously cited her as a founder, it now states she has never been a member. The donations form part of a broader pattern in which V-Híd has supported numerous organisations linked to the ruling party, including sports academies, media foundations and civic clubs, often channeling money derived from large state contracts.
Why it matters
It reveals how firms benefiting from public contracts funnel money to groups close to the ruling party, raising questions about patronage and transparency.
