Magyar Péter pushes surprise drug and alcohol tests for MPs, backed by Fidesz faction

MP Magyar Péter has called for compulsory, unannounced alcohol and drug testing of parliamentarians, a proposal that the Fidesz faction says it supports.

Magyar Péter announced a proposal to introduce mandatory, surprise alcohol and drug tests for members of the Hungarian parliament. The suggestion followed a video posted by the prime minister, which criticized a fellow lawmaker and called on the Tisza faction to draft an amendment to the house rules. The Fidesz parliamentary faction replied that it supports the measure and expressed hope that the regulations will also cover Magyar Péter himself.

Throughout his career, Magyar Péter has repeatedly subjected himself to drug testing, notably urging the then-Fidesz EP leader Deutsch Tamás and other government officials to be tested in June 2024. In March 2026, just weeks before the parliamentary election, he underwent an extensive drug test at a laboratory in Vienna, which later showed no substance use for months prior. The proposal has sparked debate over parliamentary oversight and personal privacy.

Why it matters

The plan could reshape how Hungarian lawmakers are monitored for substance use, influencing political accountability.
