Meta's Muse AI builds detailed personal profiles of every contact
Researchers have accessed internal files of Meta's Muse assistant, revealing that it automatically creates a profile page for each person in a user’s network.
Independent researcher Karan Joshi used Muse’s own chat function to retrieve extensive internal prompts, exposing how the AI builds a dedicated page for every individual a user interacts with. The instructions detail an hourly process that gathers publicly available information and user-provided data to fill sections such as Facts, History, Relationship, Common interests, Open threads and Strengthening. Muse is designed to rely only on verified evidence, avoiding fabricated details, and can log birthdays, anniversaries and other significant events.
Meta claims each user’s data lives in an isolated virtual machine that can be wiped, and that the assistant seeks explicit user approval before sending messages or making purchases. Experts like Carissa Véliz and Miranda Bogen warn that the breadth of personal data collected raises significant privacy and ethical concerns.
