Microsoft and Nvidia unveil $5,900 Surface Laptop Ultra, a high-end Windows-on-Arm challenger
The Surface Laptop Ultra, built with Nvidia’s RTX Spark ARM chip, offers a premium design and bright 15-inch MicroLED screen but delivers mixed performance, especially for local AI tasks.
Microsoft and Nvidia have collaborated on the Surface Laptop Ultra, a premium Windows-on-Arm notebook featuring a 15-inch 3270 × 2180 MicroLED panel that can reach 2,000 nits of HDR brightness and a 3:2 touchscreen. The top configuration includes an 18-core RTX Spark CPU, a 6,144-CUDA-core GPU comparable to a mobile RTX 5060, 128 GB of unified memory and a 1 TB Gen 5 SSD, priced at $5,900. The design mirrors Apple’s pro laptops with an all-aluminum chassis, magnetic USB-C charging and a large haptic trackpad, yet the device’s CPU performance lags behind competing MacBook Pros.
Local AI models run but require significant fan output and technical know-how, making the feature feel like a beta. Gaming performance is respectable on medium settings with DLSS, though some titles are limited by ARM emulation. Battery life is about seven hours under heavy AI use and up to ten hours for lighter tasks. Overall, the laptop targets developers and AI enthusiasts, while most users may find cheaper alternatives sufficient.
