Middlesbrough tops England and Wales crime rankings amid surge in violent incidents

Home Office statistics for the year ending March 2026 place Middlesbrough at the top of England and Wales crime tables, with 23,419 recorded offences - 150 per 1,000 people - surpassing all other areas except central London. The town recorded the nation’s highest rates of criminal damage and arson (3,069 incidents, 20 per 1,000) and ranked second for violence against the person (8,336 incidents, 53 per 1,000) and violence with injury (2,320 incidents, 15 per 1,000).

Additional categories included 856 sexual offences, 6,200 thefts, 1,206 vehicle crimes and 1,121 drug offences. In August, a wrong-way Volkswagen Passat collided with a police vehicle on the A66, killing seven people, including officers PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough. A separate arson attack sparked a house fire in Grangetown, killing a woman and a seven-year-old child, and a 23-year-old man was later charged with two counts of murder. Cleveland Police, supported by neighbouring forces and the National Crime Agency, have made 24 arrests linked to organised-crime investigations.
