Mike Hussey mulls possible role as England's Test batting coach ahead of Ashes

Former Australian star Mike Hussey said he is open to joining England as their Test batting coach, a move that could see him work against his home side in next year’s Ashes.

Mike Hussey, widely respected for his technical cricket knowledge, disclosed that England’s newly appointed Test head coach Stephen Fleming has casually asked him to consider the role of batting coach for the England side. Their connection dates back to fifteen years as teammates and later as coaches with the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings. Hussey, who works as one outlet commentator and has just finished coaching Welsh Fire in The Hundred, admitted he has not fully contemplated the proposal but remains open to the possibility.

He noted that he previously wore an England training shirt at the 2022 T20 World Cup, which felt odd at the time. Should he accept, Hussey would be helping England prepare to face Australia in the Ashes series scheduled for June through August next year. The appointment would follow the recent replacement of former New Zealand coach Brendon McCullum, who stays on as England’s white-ball coach.

Why it matters

A former Australian great could end up coaching England, potentially influencing the outcome of the upcoming Ashes series.
