Millions urged to check eligibility for £150 Warm Home Discount and other benefits

Experts warn that many pensioners and low-income households miss out on the £150 Warm Home Discount and other DWP support because they do not claim entitled benefits.

The Department for Work and Pensions offers a Warm Home Discount of £150 to eligible households, yet the scheme requires claimants to be receiving means-tested benefits. Abigail Everett highlighted that a large number of pension-age individuals and working-age adults fail to claim Pension Credit or Universal Credit, thereby forfeiting the discount and related assistance such as Cold Weather Payments and free TV licences for those over 75.

Pension Credit tops up weekly income to £238 for singles and up to £363.25 for couples, unlocking further support that can total over £4,000 annually. Eligibility can be checked via online benefits calculators, like the one provided by Turn2us. Everett stressed that £24 billion of support goes unclaimed each year and encouraged people not to assume ineligibility without checking.

Why it matters

Missing out on available benefits can leave vulnerable households facing higher energy costs and financial strain.
