Mitsotakis announces expanded tax debt installments and new heating oil price caps

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the government will raise the maximum number of tax-debt installments to 120 and will keep heating oil prices below €1.75 per litre, while also boosting diesel pump subsidies.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis used his regular Sunday Facebook update to outline a series of relief measures. Tax-debtors will be allowed to repay overdue amounts to the tax authority and social insurance funds in up to 120 installments, with each payment no less than €30, and servicers will face higher penalties for violations. On the energy front, the government will increase the diesel pump subsidy from 10 to 15 minutes, achieving a combined discount of 20 minutes, and plans to announce a ceiling of €1.75 per litre for heating oil within the next two weeks.

Mitsotakis urged the European Commission and Eurogroup to grant Greece more fiscal leeway so that additional VAT proceeds can be redirected to targeted support without breaching spending caps. The announcements come as Crete deals with severe flooding, prompting emergency coordination by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

Why it matters

The measures aim to reduce financial pressure on Greek households amid rising energy costs and debt burdens.
