Mitsotakis highlights Sinai monastery pact, Aegean EEZ talks and anti-corruption actions

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis praised a new agreement on the Saint Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, noted renewed EEZ negotiations with Egypt and announced arrests in a basketball-match-fixing probe and a major tax-evasion case.

In his weekly briefing, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis celebrated a legally binding agreement with Egypt that guarantees the religious character and exclusive worship rights of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai, calling it a historic achievement. He announced that Greece and Egypt have resumed negotiations over the remaining segment of their Exclusive Economic Zone, framing the talks as a reinforcement of the Athens-Cairo strategic partnership against neighboring revisionist claims.

Mitsotakis also criticized PASOK for opposing a law that sets a 15-year age limit for minors on social media platforms. He highlighted recent arrests of the president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation and referees in a match-fixing investigation, alongside a high-profile tax-evasion case involving a well-known retail chain, stressing that the focus is on major offenders while upholding the right to a fair trial. Additional topics included the launch of the national supercomputer "DAIDALOS," new AI research facilities, a collective wage agreement for the cement industry, strong tourism and export growth, and plans to expand the National Archaeological Museum.
