Monsoon floods kill 18 and displace thousands in Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh

In the last two days, monsoon activity intensified across eastern and central India, unleashing torrential rain that flooded large swaths of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Uttar Pradesh confirmed 17 deaths, with additional injuries reported in districts such as Amethi, Bahraich and Lakhimpur Kheri, and the state saw standing Kharif crops damaged. Chhattisgarh suffered one drowning death in Kondagaon and widespread waterlogging that disrupted road networks and led to school closures in eight districts.

Odisha saw over 40,000 people evacuated from ten districts, with thousands of homes and hectares of farmland affected. The Ganga Expressway near Unnao experienced severe waterlogging, halting traffic on the major project. Relief officials are coordinating evacuations, assessing crop losses, and monitoring river levels as the monsoon persists.
