Mother's Birthday Gift Shotgun Used in Silver Rail Elementary School Shooting
A legally purchased shotgun that a mother gave her 16-year-old son for recreation was used in the fatal Silver Rail Elementary attack, killing four and prompting a parent to shoot the assailant.
Shauntai Nickerson legally acquired a Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun in August 2026 and gave it to her 16-year-old son for recreational use as a birthday gift. On October 15, the teenager entered a special-needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School and opened fire, killing three students—aged five, eight and eleven—and a 25-year-old teacher. The shooter was then confronted by Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter whose two daughters attend the school; Giamanco pursued the gunman and shot him dead inside the classroom.
The incident left the community grieving and raised renewed scrutiny of firearm access for minors. The case highlights how legally owned firearms can end up in the hands of teenagers. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the weapon’s transfer to the attacker.
