Mourinho reshuffles Real Madrid's core, moves Valverde to right back

José Mourinho altered Real Madrid’s starting XI, deploying Fede Valverde at right-back and starting Arda Güler in midfield for the Sevilla match.

Real Madrid entered the Sevilla clash with a markedly different formation after a difficult spell that included a loss in Rome. Mourinho moved Fede Valverde, originally slated for a central role, to right-back and gave Arda Güler a midfield berth alongside Tchouameni. Endrick was handed a starting spot on the right flank, while long-time signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries stayed on the bench, signalling a strategic shift.

Mourinho said the adjustments have improved possession, control and attacking options, a view supported by a solitary goal that delivered a 1-0 victory. He also praised Yan Diomande’s emergence after Vinicius’s suspension and noted the need for further growth in the young Brazilian’s finishing. The changes come amid broader criticism of officiating and tension with LaLiga officials.

Why it matters

Mourinho's tactical overhaul could shape Real Madrid's title chase and player roles for the rest of the season.
