MP Rayer cites Anwar's 1998 assault to demand answers on detainee's death

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer invoked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's 1998 police assault while urging authorities to explain the death of detainee Noorizwan Zulkefly.

During a parliamentary press briefing, RSN Rayer referenced Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's 1998 assault by then Inspector-General Abdul Rahim Noor to highlight ongoing concerns about custodial abuse. He demanded a thorough explanation for the death of Noorizwan Zulkefly, who died on October 1 after roughly ten to twelve days of detention at Cheras police headquarters. Rayer challenged the claim that Noorizwan’s injuries resulted from a simple fall, noting the presence of six broken ribs, spinal cord trauma and extensive head injuries documented by the family.

He urged the IGP, the home minister and the Home Ministry to disclose how such injuries could occur and to suspend the officers involved pending investigation. Rayer also called for the case to be investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. The family has filed two police reports and plans a peaceful protest outside Bukit Aman on October 17 to present a memorandum demanding answers.

Why it matters
