MP urges BUDI95 aid to be redirected away from wealthy and MPs
Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh called for BUDI95 funds to be excluded from rich households and parliamentarians, proposing they go directly to vulnerable M40 families.
In a parliamentary discussion on the 2027 budget, Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh proposed that the BUDI95 assistance be withheld from wealthy individuals and members of parliament, directing the money instead to vulnerable M40 families who receive minimal government aid. He noted that the scheme’s eligibility was raised to 300 liters, yet only about 100,000 people—under 1% of those eligible—actually use the full benefit. Jusoh questioned whether gross M40 income alone is a sufficient measure of need, pointing out that many households just above the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah cutoff still struggle with living costs.
He echoed Salamiah Mohd Nor's call to prevent high-income earners from receiving the SARA grant and suggested that the 1% fee on SARA transactions be given to a state-owned company to boost public resources. The MP emphasized expanding basic health coverage for the most vulnerable within the M40 group.
Why it matters
Redirecting BUDI95 could improve aid efficiency for Malaysia's most financially strained households.
