MPM calls for tighter coordination with authorities to boost direct Labuan shipping
Megah Port Management urges the Labuan Port Authority, Labuan Corporation and Customs to work together on establishing reliable direct shipping services to Labuan.
Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM) has appealed for closer collaboration among the Labuan Port Authority, Labuan Corporation and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to develop sustainable direct shipping routes to Labuan. The appeal comes after Sabah Customs halted cargo transit through Kota Kinabalu, which MPM views as a catalyst for enhancing logistics efficiency and expanding the island's cargo base. MPM stresses the need for a joint coordination platform to implement clear guidelines, address operational challenges and keep customs and industry parties engaged.
It requests written customs instructions on documentation, procedures and treatment of cargo already in transit. The company also proposes joint sessions with shipping lines, agents and freight forwarders to assess demand, lock in commercial commitments and set appropriate vessel schedules, noting that sufficient cargo volumes are essential for regular calls. Additionally, MPM calls for greater transparency in logistics charges and regular reviews of performance metrics to ensure a resilient maritime network that supports Labuan's economic growth.
