Musk warns neocloud firms face collapse, says SpaceX will not acquire them
Elon Musk said on X that the wave of AI-focused cloud providers will see heavy consolidation and that SpaceX has no plans to buy any of them.
In a series of X posts, Elon Musk described the AI-cloud sector as over-leveraged and likely to undergo severe consolidation, with many of the roughly 200 neocloud firms facing “guppy-level death.” He said lenders are reluctant to fund businesses that depend almost solely on AI data-center earnings, unlike SpaceX, which draws cash from Starlink and rocket launches and has locked in $40 billion of debt for GPU acquisition.
Musk rejected rumors that SpaceX might purchase any neocloud companies, labeling the notion pointless. His comments followed venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya’s criticism of neoclouds as poorly capitalized, and came as stocks of CoreWeave and Nebius fell 37% and 30% respectively. While Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang maintains demand for AI cloud infrastructure is soaring, Musk warned of “stranded compute” in unfinished data centers, citing Amazon Web Services’ inability to power newly delivered Nvidia racks. A Bernstein Research report also suggested only about a third of planned U.S. data-center capacity will be built, with established hyperscalers likely to succeed while newer entrants may falter.
Why it matters
Musk’s remarks highlight financial risks for AI-cloud startups and signal limited interest from major tech players in acquiring them.
