Nationwide train halt highlights Norway's telecom vulnerability after Telenor outage

A failure in Telenor's mobile network disrupted phone service across Norway, leading to a complete suspension of train traffic nationwide.

On Thursday afternoon, a malfunction in Telenor's mobile network spread across Norway, preventing customers from making calls or sending messages and also impacting callers on rival networks trying to reach Telenor numbers. Police issued alerts that both emergency (112) and regular telephone numbers might be inaccessible, including the emergency lines 110 and 113 in multiple locations. The disruption quickly affected the railway system, forcing trains to reduce speed and eventually stop because communication with emergency services at certain level crossings could not be guaranteed.

Bane NOR explained that without reliable contact with responders, train operations could not be deemed safe. The telecom problem was finally fixed at 18:51, roughly two hours after it was first reported. Security expert Bjørn Tallak Bakken warned that the incident reveals a broader vulnerability in Norway's reliance on continuous electronic communication.

Why it matters

The outage shows how a single telecom failure can cripple critical infrastructure and emergency services nationwide.
