Norwegian regulator raises alert, orders probe of Telenor after nationwide mobile outage

The Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom) elevated its emergency level and launched a supervisory investigation into Telenor following Thursday's mobile network failure that disrupted train operations and emergency calls.

On Thursday, a major failure in Telenor's mobile network prompted the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom) to raise its emergency preparedness and initiate a supervisory investigation. The disruption halted train services managed by Bane Nor and caused difficulties for several police districts in reaching emergency numbers 112 and the public hotline 02800. Nkom director John-Eivind Velure emphasized the essential role of mobile connectivity in national infrastructure and expressed concern over the impact on emergency response.

Telenor reported that the problem was confined to voice traffic, with SMS, mobile data and broadband functioning normally, and stated that the issue originated within its own systems without evidence of deliberate sabotage. Nkom's probe will seek to uncover the root cause and outline steps to prevent recurrence. Other carriers, including Lyse Tele (Ice) and Telia, have not reported similar problems for their users.
