Netflix's Sports Video Podcasts Face Crucial Test as NFL Season Kicks Off

Netflix has refreshed its entire video-podcast slate and added new sports titles just as the NFL season begins, putting its sports-podcast gamble under intense scrutiny.

Eight months after entering the podcast arena, Netflix announced a full renewal of its original video-podcast lineup while also signing new sports series, notably the Pivot Podcast featuring former NFL players Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor. The service now streams 19 sports-focused video podcasts, sourced from Barstool Sports, one outlet, iHeartMedia, Netflix’s own productions and the upcoming Pivot addition on September 8.

While Barstool’s deal spans multiple years, the terms of agreements with iHeartMedia and Spotify (owner of one outlet) remain undisclosed, and Netflix has offered no concrete data on viewership or subscription influence, lumping podcasts into a generic "other shows" category during its Q2 earnings call. A recent Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights survey found that most weekly podcast listeners know they can watch podcasts on Netflix, but actual engagement numbers are unknown. As the NFL season launches, the platform’s capacity to capture the sport’s massive audience will serve as the decisive trial for its sports-podcast strategy, potentially shaping whether these shows stay or are removed.

Why it matters

The NFL season will reveal if Netflix can turn its costly sports-podcast investments into a sustainable audience draw.
