Her comments arrive after a Motor Vehicle Commission system fault incorrectly added roughly 6,600 non-citizens to the voter rolls, with fewer than 400 of those individuals voting and over 4,500 registrations slated for removal pending review.

Republican Assembly Minority Leader John DiMaio called the governor’s remarks a “significant shift” and urged Democratic leaders to schedule hearings on pending ID bills. Sherrill’s office highlighted her record of expanding voting access, citing the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act and early-voting expansions. The debate reflects broader partisan battles over voter-ID laws, with Trump recently reiterating support for the SAVE Act at the White House.
