NHS launches free flu vaccinations for tens of thousands of homeless people

The NHS is providing free flu shots to tens of thousands of homeless individuals this week, the first national programme aimed specifically at rough sleepers.

This week the NHS rolled out a nationwide free-flu vaccination programme targeting tens of thousands of homeless individuals, marking the first scheme dedicated to rough sleepers. NHS England is deploying mobile vaccination vans and temporary clinics in areas with high concentrations of people sleeping on the streets, in hostels or night shelters. Prime Minister Andy Burnham highlighted the plan as a means to shield the most vulnerable from potentially lethal infections and pledged to end rough sleeping.

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper added that serious illnesses like flu and pneumonia should not affect those without stable housing. The programme implements recommendations from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation and does not require proof of address, allowing registration via day centres, hostels or GP practices. Dr Amanda Doyle noted that winter poses heightened health risks for the homeless and emphasized the importance of equal protection for all vulnerable groups. Other groups eligible for flu jabs this week include seniors, clinical-risk adults, care-home residents and carers.

Why it matters
