He confirmed his detention alongside another individual and stated no improper conduct occurred. Shariah lawyer Amirul Ashraf Ghani explained that Jais officials are helping complete the investigation under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995, which penalises non-mahram Muslims found in close proximity under suspicious circumstances.
The statute provides for a fine up to RM3,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both. The case remains at the investigation stage, with the Selangor shariah prosecution department expected to decide on any charges. Nazmi apologized to his wife, families and others affected, describing the episode as a lapse in judgment, and was suspended from party activities for three months.
