Nordic football bodies declare loss of confidence in FIFA president Infantino

Following turmoil at the North American World Cup—such as the suspension of striker Folarin Balogun after intervention by Donald Trump and criticism of Iran’s treatment—FIFA President Gianni Infantino faced mounting pressure over a leaked plan to commercialise competition stakes. UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC publicly opposed the proposal, prompting FIFA to cancel it while retaining Infantino in office. Subsequent resignations and the dismissal of chief operating officer Kevin Lamour heightened the crisis.

On Sunday, the six Nordic football associations released a joint communiqué stating they have lost confidence in Infantino and supporting UEFA’s call for a boycott. They demanded guarantees against future private ownership of FIFA events and urged an independent investigation into the FIFA Forward Enterprise affair, as well as a comprehensive governance review. Former players Robert Pires and Juan Sebastián Verón also joined the criticism, urging reforms across the sport.
