Norway's sovereign wealth fund reports significant decline in Q3 performance

The Government Pension Fund Global posted a negative return for the third quarter, with its total value dropping sharply.

Norges Bank Investment Management disclosed that Norway's sovereign wealth fund experienced a negative return in the third quarter of 2026, leading to a notable reduction in its overall valuation. The downturn stemmed from a combination of lower performance in bond investments and the impact of a stronger krone, which together eroded the fund's market price. Equity investments managed to generate a small positive return, but this was insufficient to counterbalance the losses elsewhere.

An additional contribution of fresh capital was injected, tempering the overall decline. The fund's performance lagged slightly behind its benchmark index, according to the manager's deputy, Trond Grande.

Why it matters

The fund's loss affects Norway's long-term fiscal planning and the global perception of its investment strategy.
