Nvidia chief argues AI will reshape, not erase, jobs by distinguishing tasks from roles

Speaking at Y Combinator’s Startup School, Nvidia founder Jensen Huang warned that the current debate over AI-driven job loss conflates tasks with entire occupations. He explained that while AI can efficiently replace discrete tasks—like reading a database-driven answer in customer support— it cannot replace the overarching purpose that defines a job. Huang pointed to Uber’s recent 10% cut in support staff as evidence of task automation, yet highlighted that radiology positions continue to grow because faster scan reading expands patient intake.

He extended the argument to software engineering, noting that coders now spend more time directing AI code generators, and claimed that paralegal hiring is rising, citing the legal-tech startup Harvey. By disputing the half-of-entry-level-jobs forecast popularized by Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Huang aligned with recent softening of AI-doom narratives from Sam Altman and Mark Zuckerberg, suggesting that AI could instead spur new roles and support a re-industrialisation of the U.S. economy.
