Nvidia pledges $1 billion to boost U.S. quantum, health and energy research

Nvidia announced a $1 billion, five-year commitment to expand U.S. research capacity in quantum computing, healthcare and energy security, unveiled at a Washington, D.C. science forum.

Nvidia revealed a $1 billion, five-year plan to bolster U.S. research and development in quantum computing, healthcare and energy security at the Science: A New Golden Age conference in Washington, D.C. Founder and CEO Jensen Huang said the investment will help turn scientific breakthroughs into jobs and industrial leadership, aligning with President Trump's Genesis Mission. The money will be directed toward higher-education research institutions, U.S. quantum-computing projects and cloud providers serving federal missions, though exact splits were not disclosed.

Nvidia also noted participation in Phase 2 Genesis Mission awards covering quantum, fusion energy, accelerator design and microelectronics, and reiterated its long-standing collaboration with the Department of Energy, including building the agency’s largest supercomputer at Argonne and adding seven new systems across Argonne and Los Alamos. Additionally, the company highlighted its quantum-software efforts, such as the open-source Ising AI models designed to aid researchers in building error-corrected quantum processors. This pledge underscores Nvidia’s expanding role from AI hardware to broader scientific infrastructure.

Why it matters

The funding could accelerate U.S. breakthroughs in quantum tech, medicine and energy, shaping future industry competitiveness.
