Odisha mobilizes forces as severe cyclonic storm approaches Andhra coast

The Odisha government has activated emergency teams and cancelled officials' leave ahead of a very severe cyclonic storm expected to hit Andhra Pradesh on October 28.

The India Meteorological Department warned that a depression in the Bay of Bengal will intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm, likely to strike the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on the forenoon of October 28, with sustained winds of 115-125 kmph. Although the landfall is forecast for Andhra Pradesh, Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi instructed the state to stay fully prepared, cancelling leave for district collectors, magistrates and other key officers.

He emphasized a zero-casualty goal, ordering evacuations, shelter readiness, and the closure of schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri. Around 60 ODRAF teams, 17 NDRF teams and 225 fire-service units have been placed on high alert, and 100 cyclone shelters and 1,000 temporary sites have been earmarked for possible use. The IMD also issued a red rain warning for several districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms through October 29.
