ODS calls for police review after visitors were cleared from parliamentary gallery
ODS asked the police president to investigate how officers removed members of the public from the Chamber of Deputies gallery, alleging excessive force.
Police officers cleared a number of people from the public gallery while the Chamber of Deputies was in session, and ODS alleges that force was applied even to those who did not disturb the proceedings. The party has written to the police president requesting a detailed review of the operation and the release of any video or service records. In parallel, the Pirates have launched a petition to remove Tomio Okamura, the coalition leader of SPD, from his role as Speaker, a move also backed by ODS, TOP 09 and the People's Party.
Security service spokesperson Tomáš Procházka said the procedures were in line with regulations, noting the presence of protected persons in the building. ODS chairwoman Jana Černochová argues the police should have used only necessary force and that the Speaker's orders do not exempt officers from legal obligations. The incident follows police statements that dozens attempted to breach the parliament and that a suspect tried to throw a paving stone at the building.
Why it matters
It raises questions about police conduct, parliamentary transparency and the balance of power in Czech politics.
