Šťastný warns opposition will make life difficult for government over fee repeal
Former parliamentarian Šťastný says the opposition is set to block the government’s plan to abolish concession fees and stresses that media should not impose limits.
The lower house began deliberations on eliminating concession fees on Friday, a meeting characterized by a number of atypical occurrences. Šťastný, a former member of Parliament between 2006 and 2010, reflected on his experience with complex bills such as the church restitution law, health-sector regulatory fees, and a radar project in Brdy, noting that the chamber’s dynamics were once more collaborative. He contends that, after a three-term hiatus, current legislators have become overly defensive and that the opposition now consistently blocks legislative work, save for a few bright spots. Šťastný cautions against framing the debate as a democratic showdown and calls for a transparent discussion.
He also asserted that media should refrain from limiting coverage of the fee issue. The episode highlights ongoing tensions between the governing coalition and opposition parties over policy reforms.
