OpenAI CFO says ChatGPT ads could merge Google search intent with Meta's context

OpenAI's chief financial officer Sarah Friar described the chatbot's ad vision as a blend of Google’s search intent and Meta’s user context, projecting a potential $1 billion annual revenue stream.

At the Communacopia + Technology Conference in San Francisco, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar outlined the company’s ambition to turn ChatGPT into a high-value advertising channel, comparing it to a child of Google and Meta. She explained that the chatbot can combine the high-intent nature of search queries with the rich contextual data that powers social media ads, creating a potent platform. Current basic ads appear beneath responses for free and Go users, and Friar said the seven-month run already suggests a trajectory toward $1 billion in yearly revenue.

The concept was originally inspired by former OpenAI commercial chief Fidji Simo. Friar also hinted at more sophisticated, AI-native ad formats in development, a notable pivot from CEO Sam Altman's prior view that ads and AI were "uniquely unsettling." The move positions OpenAI against rivals like Anthropic, which opposes ads in chatbot outputs, as both firms prepare for upcoming IPOs.
