Opportunity Party leader rejects supporting current coalition agreements
Opportunity Party leader Qiulae Wong said her party would not back the existing coalition or its deals, even if it becomes kingmaker.
In a recent interview, Qiulae Wong clarified that the Opportunity Party will not support one outlet coalition or its policy package, even if the party holds the balance of power after the vote. Polling shows Opportunity positioned between the right- and left-leaning blocs, though some surveys place it close to the 5 percent entry barrier. National’s Christopher Luxon has repeatedly dismissed the possibility of a coalition with Opportunity, a move Wong characterized as a risky political game.
Wong said the party would still engage with the largest party post-election but would not automatically join a government. She specifically rejected backing a Treaty Principles bill, while indicating willingness to cooperate on issues like competition policy and innovation. The party’s major tax overhaul proposal remains a priority, though Wong acknowledged it may take longer to advance in Parliament.
Why it matters
The stance could shape coalition negotiations and influence policy direction after the election.
