Opportunity Party Sets Non-Negotiable Demands for Future Coalition Support

Following a recent poll that placed the Opportunity Party at 6%, above the 5% threshold needed for parliamentary entry, leader Qiulae Wong announced the party’s “bottom lines” for coalition talks. The non-negotiable items include granting the Commerce Commission greater authority to curb market dominance, establishing a lobbying register and a $30,000 cap on political donations, and creating a 10-year health plan with firm funding and workforce commitments.

Wong also demanded an immediate phase-out of bottom trawling and a firm recommitment to New Zealand’s Paris Agreement obligations, protecting the Climate Change Commission’s independence. The party has signaled willingness to work with either National or Labour, though National’s Christopher Luxon has ruled out cooperation and Labour’s Chris Hipkins has expressed reservations about Opportunity’s tax stance. If the party’s poll performance holds through the November vote, its support could prove decisive in forming the next government.
