Opportunity’s Qiulae Wong emerges as potential kingmaker in NZ multi-party debate

Opportunity leader Qiulae Wong impressed in TVNZ's multi-party debate, putting her party at about 8% support and a possible kingmaker role.

The TVNZ multi-party debate gave minor parties the spotlight, and Opportunity’s leader Qiulae Wong proved a formidable contender, challenging veteran politicians such as Winston Peters and Greens MP Chlöe Swarbrick while maintaining a calm demeanor. Wong dismissed Peters’ remarks on unity and diversity as dangerous and rejected any role under him as foreign minister, labeling his comments toward Green MP Lawrence Xu-Nan as racist.

A poll released shortly before the debate placed Opportunity at roughly 8% of the vote, positioning the party to hold the balance of power. Overall minor-party support now tops 40%, a rise from 31% in the last election and 15% a decade earlier. ACT leader David Seymour used the occasion to brand his party as energetic, and Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rawiri Waititi focused on winning electorate seats. The performance suggests Opportunity could clear the five-percent threshold needed for parliamentary representation.

Why it matters

The debate could decide which small parties will shape New Zealand's next coalition government.
