Opposition lacks votes to topple Babiš government in upcoming parliamentary vote

The opposition holds only 92 of the 200 seats, far short of the 101 needed to oust the cabinet, and will vote on a motion of no confidence.

In the Czech parliament, the opposition controls only 92 seats out of 200, insufficient to achieve the 101 votes needed to dismiss the Babiš cabinet. Opposition figures warned of a budgetary collapse, alleged conflicts of interest for Andrej Babiš, and continuous pressure on courts, NGOs, and public media. The motion of no confidence will be debated in an extraordinary session set shortly before local and Senate elections, allowing the opposition to voice its concerns more prominently.

Critics from ODS, the Pirates, and STAN accused the prime minister of misusing subsidies and steering the country toward debt. The government survived a similar attempt in early February, but the upcoming vote underscores deep political tensions.

Why it matters

The vote could determine whether one outlet government remains in power ahead of upcoming elections.
